Europe Vacation | Part 2

In case you missed Part 1 from our Europe trip yesterday, you can see it here! Moving right along, today we are sharing our adventures in Naples, Pompeii and Rome! Enjoy!

We ported in Naples but quickly realized we weren’t too interested in spending much time there, so we hopped on a train to Salerno on the Amalfi Coast.

In Salerno we had the best gelato of our trip!

After a couple hours of shopping and exploring in Salerno, we took another train to Pompeii, and we were so glad we did!

A quick shoutout to my amazing husband who carried this backpack like a pro – sunscreen, hand sanitizer, umbrellas and more! #dadstatus

We got our first bite of authentic Neapolitan pizza here…

Then, we headed to the Pompeii ruins and were blown away at the detail and size of this amazing historical site!

Seriously though…this was built before Jesus roamed the earth – mind blown!

We couldn’t believe the extent of the ruins and that they are still excavating!

Mt. Vesuvius wasn’t all that close to the city of Pompeii which makes it even more shocking that it still got covered in up to 20 feet of ash after the volcano erupted in 79 A.D.

The next day we woke up in Rome – gotta love that about cruising! We took a train from our port into the city and a metro from the train station to the Colosseum!

It was SO amazing to see it in person!

See that cross in the bottom left image? It was to recognize all the Christian martyrs that died for their faith. Pretty powerful.

He’s all mine!

They kept the animals and slaves (among other things) under the arena floor. Before the underground portion was built, they used to flood the lower part of the Colosseum for naval games! Crazy!

The rest of the day we just made our way around the city exploring all the amazing historical sites! We wish we had more time in Rome…

Pantheon

Unfortunately for us, the Trevi Fountain was undergoing a two year restoration project! We still threw coins in the empty fountain, but it wasn’t quite the same.

Spanish steps – more restoration!

We then took the metro to Vatican City.

St. Peter’s Basilica was pretty amazing!

So unbelievably intricate, ornate, and grand!

It’s hard to believe, but the paintings in the dome aren’t even paintings, they’re mosaics! It was unbelievable!

Then, we took an elevator up halfway and walked 300+ steps the rest of the way to make it to the top of the dome! – SO worth the extra 2 euros for the elevator!

Oh, how we loved Rome – hope to get back there again someday!

Tomorrow our adventures in Florence, Toulon and Barcelona will be on the blog!
