AMP Systems | How We Use Our Equipment On Wedding Days

Every photographer has their own little system for how they pack their bags and manage their equipment on a wedding day. Today we wanted to share a little behind the scenes look at how we use our equipment throughout the day and what cameras bags we use to lug around our equipment!

I carry a Kelly Moore Songbird bag (in Saddle). In this bag I have my Nikon D3s camera body, my 35mm 1.4 (for detail and getting ready shots), my 105mm 2.8 macro lens (for detail shots), and my 85mm 1.4 (for close-up getting ready shots and bridal portraits).  also I have a flash (just in case – I normally don’t need it) and some extra goodies like batteries, chapstick, bandaids, bobby pins, command hook, etc.

Mike carries the ONA Union Street bag. In this bag he has his Nikon D3s camera body, a 24mm 2.8 lens (for some wide shots of the groomsmen getting ready) and a 50mm 1.4 (for all other groom/groomsmen getting ready shots). He also has a flash to use if necessary.

Once we get to the church, out comes our rolling Think Tank bag (life/back saver!)! This bad boy carries everything else…our 70-200mm 2.8, back up camera (Nikon D700), flashes, pocket wizards, lens hoods, batteries, memory cards, iPad…you name it!

For the ceremony I am shooting with the 70-200mm 95% of the time, but also have the 50mm on the D700 for some processional shots. Mike is shooting with the 85mm and will throw on the 24mm or 35mm for a couple wide shots.

On to portraits – first up we have family portraits…I am the only one shooting at this point (usually with the 35mm), and we have an off camera flash set up with an umbrella. Then, for the rest of the portraits I am shooting with either the 85mm or 70-200mm getting the close-up shots, while Mike is shooting with the 35mm or 50mm getting wider shots (this allows us to get double the portraits in the same amount of time with a bunch of different focal lengths).

Finally, the reception. We set up an off camera flash for the reception and use it for everything from the detail shots to the entrances, toasts and dancing. For details I am using an 85mm or 70-200mm to get the close-up shots while Mike makes his rounds using the 35mm to get the full room shots and the individual table shots. Then, for all the main events, we have this same set up – I’m shooting tight and close-up while Mike is shooting wider, until the dance floor opens, then I shoot with the 35mm and Mike is shooting with the 24mm or 50mm.

This was more rambling than I was planning for this post, but I hope you find this helpful! I’d love to know what you, as a photographer, do different! Feel free to share in the comments below or email me at info@alisonmishphotography.com!

Happy Wednesday, friends!
