Chicago Roadtrip 2014

On Monday’s blog post, you saw some of our iPhone photos from our road trip to Chicago last weekend, and today, we are sharing a whole lot more from our trip! We try to have at least one weekend off each month for getaways like this, and we’ve known for a while now that we would be making a trip to Chicago this past weekend to see Wrigley Field. We had decided that we had to cross off Wrigley this year since they are doing some renovations to modernize the historic ballpark (second oldest in the country!) this coming off-season. We also decided to make it into a mini anniversary getaway since we already had plans to go away and our 3rd anniversary is only a week away (can you believe that?)! It was truly the perfect fun and relaxing weekend away in the midst of wedding season, and while some may say we are crazy to go away so much during wedding season, we say when you love to travel, you just make it work! Let’s take a look at our trip!

We headed out after work on Thursday and made our way to Chicago in just over 7 hours! Mike was a part of the Breaking Bad frenzy last year, and he is now getting me into the show. So during our trip out there, I did some work then watched the first several episodes of the show while Mike listened. Mike wasn’t kidding…it’s a pretty good show, and we are just getting started!

We got to our hotel just after midnight and woke up the next morning to try a breakfast spot everyone was talking about, Lou Mitchell’s! While it was good and a fun atmosphere…the best breakfast we had out there came on Sunday (see below).

Then we walked around town and enjoyed the beautiful architecture (and got a couple head shots of each other)!

Serious…what a hunk!

Selfie! One of our favorite uses of our 24mm lens…it’s small so it travels well and allows us to take selfies…important qualities to have in a lens, I know!

Willis (Sears) Tower!

Window portrait downtown…

Our home for the weekend!

After breakfast and walking around town, we made our way to the famous Bean in Millennium Park! While it was definitely crowded, we had fun with it!

Then we found a bike rental shop nearby and decided to give the whole tandem bike thing a try…

First stop…Navy Pier

So Cal, anyone?

You know what they say…those who tandem bike together stay together! Right? :)

After our day of riding bikes our bike around town we cleaned up and headed out for an early anniversary dinner at one of the best steakhouse’s in town!

After dinner, we made our way to the top of the tallest building in America and stood (and sat) on a sky deck that looks straight down (106 floors)!

Since we didn’t take our camera with us when we went kayaking Saturday morning, these iPhone photos will have to do. We made our way down the Chicago River through the middle of the city! Seriously…one of the coolest experiences! Oh and we kayaked tandem as well!

After cleaning up from kayaking, we met up with my parents who came to Chicago for the night to visit Wrigley Field with us! For us, it was the 15th ballpark on our way to all 30 of them, but for them, it was a dream of my dad’s to see Wrigley Field before they made any big changes!

Ballpark #15

Not long after making our way into the stadium, the storm clouds came out and the tarp went on the field!

During the rain delay, this guy jumped onto the field from the center field wall and started running towards the tarp when he got tackled by security! It made the 2 hour rain delay go a little faster!

Finally, game time!

Breakfast with the parentals…

A little sleepy but oh so happy to have had such an amazing weekend together!

And when we didn’t think we could be any happier…this came out! For me, it was an order of the Signature Berry Bliss crepes, and for Mike, the Oreo S’more Pancakes!

Thumbs up for one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had (and we are picky with our breakfast places) and an all around great weekend!

Until our next adventure…

Thank you for sharing. Me and my girlfriend are going in Sep. Her niece just opened a bistro there. I would love any advice you can give me. Especially what NOT to do, where did you stay, did you like it.

  3. Debbie Lenz says:

What is the name of the breakfast place that you loved so much?
